About

Overview

I design immersive spatial experiences that combine movement and data-driven systems.

Coming from a background as a trained dancer, I now combine my knowledge of movement and computer assisted design to create bespoke spatial experiences for future-city storytelling.

Revealing hidden dynamics

Where Movement Could Be

Movement is invisible systems in public space. It’s in the flow of crowds generating streams of data. I use computer designed processes like body tracking libraries (like what you see here) to reveal, analyze, and show this hidden choreography, turning static environments into living stages.

01 Digital Activation

From Content to Choreography

The Static View

Screens in public spaces often act as digital wallpapers—looping flat content that feels disconnected from the physical environment.

The Kinetic Shift

I treat screens as reactive surfaces that move with the people watching. By anchoring digital content to physical movement, we transform passive displays into active, site-specific performers.

02 Data Visualization

Making Data Dance

The Static View

Complex metrics—like footfall, temperature, or social sentiment—usually stay hidden in spreadsheets, illegible to the public.

The Kinetic Shift

Movement is a universal language. I translate abstract data into fluid motion, making the invisible pulse of a venue instantly intuitive and engaging for anyone passing by.

03 Spatial Memory

The Ghost in the Machine

The Static View

Public spaces are often amnesiac—once a crowd disperses or a performance ends, the energy creates no lasting trace.

The Kinetic Shift

We can give space a memory. I build systems that capture and echo the "ghosts" of past movements, allowing the history of human activity to layer onto the present moment.

Four main Areas of Practise

I work across these areas.

01

Urban Media & Digital Placemaking

Responsive urban environments that make invisible city data legible, beautiful, and human. Site-specific digital infrastructure for smart cities and communities.

How it all connects

City teams, cultural institutions, and brands are under pressure to prove impact, but the story in their data rarely reaches the street. I connect those gaps through movement-led placemaking—translating real inputs (footfall, program data, community stories, performance footage) into motion systems for buildings, plazas, stages, and campaigns.

Perspectives

What collaborators say

"Wendy Yu's work is a mesmerizing practice that sits at the intersection of choreography, creative coding, and projection art. Her ability to bring dance into urban media art removes the need to have an interest or knowledge of dance because you can stumble on it."

Ashleigh Kane Glorious Sport

"Wendy Yu's superb video and AV design is totally transportive. The immense projections loom above the storytellers, seeming to dwarf them with the power of their myths."

Caroline Stafford Theatre Reviews Perth

"Wendy Yu's superb video and AV design is totally transportive. There is a giddy, self-aware sense of abandon that disguises a very real and serious examination of beliefs and spiritual philosophy."

Tim Byrne The Guardian

"The visual feast created through projection art transforms spaces into immersive storytelling environments. The work flows seamlessly from reality to dreamscape, creating an experience that is both visually overpowering and emotionally resonant."
